  • So why dont we have tarrifs on the ones that are produced in Mexico too?

    Mexico is not China.

It is in our best interest to have a stable and economically improving neighbor on our southern border.

Your all or nothing / black or white view of the world is extremely childish & naive. Simple solutions to complex problems are just how politicians manipulate those who don’t want to think to hard. Stop pretending that global trade policy is a simple solution arena & try thinking a little harder.

  • And this here highlights a core issue, the poor choice of language used to communicate the ideas.

Patriarchy and toxic masculinity, for example, are horrible terms for non academic conversations. The academics should have realized this long ago, and made a concerted effort to change the language into more gender neutral ones. The fact that not only has this not happened, but there is pushback on such suggestions, sort of proves the bias that does exist in this space.

Their poor choice of labels can only be expected to lead to the type of “man bad/woman good” thought process. Because outside of very specific academic circles, that’s exactly how those terms are read. When you read “toxic masculinity” you see “bad/broken men”. When you read “patriarchy” you read “men in control”, both terms are tailor made to lead directly to ‘blame men’ ideologies.

For a movement that, at one point, seemed very aware of & intent on changing language that reenforces old gender roles… they also seem to be fine creating and perpetuating language that actively reenforces those roles, when its men who’s roles are being reenforced.

  • OR, ya’ll are missing the joke entirely, in that he doesn’t think he’s ‘punching down’… nore is he making fun of who you think he is.

In fact, the joke is at the expense of people like those in this thread who are getting bent out of shape taking words out of context. It was tailor made to upset YOU, specifically. YOU, and your unnecessary outrage, are the butt of the joke. He’s mocking those who go overboard with the virtue signaling, and you all here are taking the bait hook, line & sinker.

There is a problem right now with self elected ‘thought police’ trying to remove all discourse, and that is VERY unhealthy for a liberal society. Totalitarianism is not healthy, no matter what your motivation is. Sacred cows are ALWAYS something to be targeted by comedy & satire, and the left wing totalitarianist word/thought police are very much a valid target, every bit as much as the MAGA idiots. For society as a whole, they are equally as dangerous, the end goal is the same but with different underlying motivations.

That being said, the special was lackluster. It felt like he was contractually obligated to give Netflix another special by the end of 2023 but didn’t have enough material yet & even what he had wasn’t very polished.

    I’m not pretending.

I’m pointing out the flaw it the whining.

There’s a lot of should and shouldn’t statements that are just wish fulfillment and not reality.

Now that you’re done bitching about the housing crisis…what’s your actual proposed solution?

Should we take the home from the guy renting you that apartment so you can have it? Force lower rents, leaving him unmotivated to bother renting it?

What’s your point beyond rents are too high? We all know there’s a problem, how do you propose we fix it, because landlords aren’t the root of the issue but this whole thread seems to want to pretend they are.

  • And your not taking into account the money the Chinese government is dumping into the industry to produce those low cost products.

The goal is to dominate the industry world wide, and you just want to allow that.

This isn’t ‘fear mongering’ this is realism.

Your last sentence is just hilarious. You believe we can’t do it because capitalism is bad, and so you want to cede the entire future of the industry to a forign power run by a dictator who would 100% use it as a weapon against us.

The world isn’t black or white, and in this case protectionism for local industry is the best of the many bad choices.

Frankly we should be dumping public money into the same industry, but we have a strong majority who are fighting it tooth & nail. If you want to be angry about the expensive EVs here, get upset about the lack of government subsidies compared to China.
