I think this is a common misconception about how electability works in a first-past-the-post voting system. There is no benefit to going with a compromise position or reaching out to moderates. The number of people who can be persuaded to vote one way or another is miniscule. The number of people who can be persuaded to vote or not to vote is massive.

If people are excited or scared, they come out to vote. With disenfranchisement primarily focused on progressive and minority voters, there’s not much left to gain in scaring regressive conservatives more, they already vote at high numbers.

In Albany, Georgia on July 20th, 2023, the relative humidity at 94 F was 54%. As someone who’s experienced dry heat vs humidity, I wanted to offer that context. Sweating just doesn’t cool you down as the humidity rises.

I kind of love those, but they are definitely excessively used.

And this is a massive increase in authority for the courts. If there is ambiguity in the wording of a law, it’s open for a lawsuit.

In my state, ballot initiatives to change to ranked choice or approval voting, ideally with expanded multiple winner districts.

And if they hear this information, they may stare blankly, refuse to take in the new information, then respond with a thought-terminating cliche like “God only made two genders.”

I love it. I’m a big fan of combining ranked choice with multi-member districts. Our current voting system is the absolute worst option for consensus.

This opens the field to candidates outside of the two parties and allows the existing parties to field multiple candidates. With multiple candidates from a party, you improve the quality of candidates. Compromise in governance becomes attractive again and not a death sentence.

Right now, the best strategy for a Republican is to be the absolute farthest right that the moderates would still vote for in order to keep a Democrat from winning.

I’ve been impressed by her ability to actually get things done. She’s been getting community programs funded in her district that accomplish Green New Deal goals but doing it silently without attaching Green New Deal wording anywhere. She got other representatives running similar programs in the same way. I respect someone who is willing to speak up but also believes in their mission enough to do it quietly if that’s what it takes.

Imagine for a moment that you are president of the United States and you are given an intelligence briefing with information that is vital to an allied nation’s safety. Under no circumstances are you to share this information with anyone. You are then in a candid two-hour conversation with a jovial diplomat from a nation hostile to that other nation. If you didn’t keep your wits about you, you might accidentally discuss the secret information.

Donald Trump is not a man who has ever had his wits about him.
