Just a general thread about running. How’s your running going? What are you training for? Did you get new shoes? Sporting an injury etc…

I finally got around to implementing strength training in my weekly schedule…fuck that shit sucks, it is so much less fun than running.

I’m also training for a longer run - a 12 km in September. I have run it many times previously, including last year, so I know what to expect from the course. Hopefully I stay injury free in the lead up this year, since last year I went in right off the back of a calf strain and struggled (slower pace + hot day was tough). I have been consistently running Parkruns again for a couple of months since a break over the summer holidays and I find it helps a lot with motivation since it gives me a weekly target in a race-like environment.

I injured my spine (at work) in 2022, but didn’t realise I had injured my spine. I thought it was a hamstring injury. I gradually dialled back the running to try and allow the “hamstring” to heal. I continued working. I stopped running in March '23. I discovered the extent of the injury in July when I got an MRI (just over a year after the injury). I was told I’d never run again.

I had surgery at the end of November last year. I was cleared to return to work a couple of weeks ago. I was made officially redundant last week (unofficially it was retaliation from my employer for daring to refuse his offer of a private payout and opt for WorkCover instead).

I ran a 32:43 at ParkRun this morning. I’m pretty happy. Unemployed, but happy.

2nd half marathon done - quite chuffed with my result (just over 2 hours). Was a beautiful day but I need a nap now!

For me, have decided to do my first race. A 10km option in the local marathon. It’s in October so heaps of time to prep. I’m currently consistently getting out with the doggo three times a week doing about 5-6km each time. Did a 7km run this morning with him. Might look at one of those Garmin training programs to get up to 10km. Anyone tried that with success?

I haven’t tried any training programs, but if you’re already doing that much running and starting to extend some of your runs towards that 10k goal then I’d say your preparation is going very well already.

Yes i did that last year for my 1st 10k. Its good, i think you can only go 12 weeks ahead? And if you adjust race day planned runs can get a bit wonky / out of wack. I would say use it as a guide for a bit to get a feel for it.

I’m not training for a particular race. Just working toward the goal of being able to jog/trot for progressively longer periods in the service of losing weight and keeping diabetes under control.

I have two cardio days per week, currently, with three or four strength training days. I do 45 minutes on a treadmill, aiming to alternate 90 seconds of walking and 90 seconds of trotting.

I log my time, distance, and average heart rate.

Eventually I’d like to be able to handle a 5k run and complete it in about 30 minutes. Currently in my 45 minute sessions I’m only getting to about 2.8 mi / 4.5 km so I have a ways to go.

Maybe not so far as you think. Keep increasing the time you are running little by little, and before long you’ll be able to run for 30 minutes without stopping.
